S. Korean Teaching Experience

Friday, December 02, 2005

Well, gee I'm sorry folks. I bet you thought I'd fallen off the face of the earth. Well I am finally getting back into the bloggin' thing not that it has been more than a month. I do not have a scanner yet so I am not going to be able to put my pictures up yet, sorry.

OK, lets see if I can bring you all up to speed with what is going on in my life lately. I am going to be starting a new school this coming Monday. Considering all the bad things I have read about other 학원 Hakwans(Korean word for school), I am really glad that I went to work for Kids College in Gimpo. So if you are reading this looking for information about schools, Mrs. Lee(the director) really cares about her teachers. Sometimes the work load may seem heavy but she takes care of you well and the apartments are beautiful.

I'm really excited about the new school! I will be in Seoul so I will be closer to the action. Which will be nice. I will be about a 10 minute walk from the subway. Before I was about 30 minute bus ride from the subway. And, my first impressions of the size of Gimpo were grandly mistaken, the City covers massive quantities of land. I went for an interview at a public school in Gimpo that was an hour car ride away.

OK, Nancy if you are reading this I think you should come to Korea to follow your dream of teaching here. It is a great experience; the most import thing to do is to talk to teachers from the school. But before you talk to anyone you should ask them if they are at the school first. You just may find that when the teacher is away from the school they will give you an entirely different story.

OK enough about finding a good school to work for. A few weeks ago I went up the hill to an ancient burial ground called Jangleon. It was very serene and beautiful. The colors were awesome as the trees were a magnificent red color. But I was bummed that I did not find out about this park sooner, as the flowers in the pond were finished blooming. I was told that they are very beautiful. Hopefully I will get the chance to see them in the spring, but I will have moved by then and I may not make it this way, but I will have a digital camera by then so if I do you can be sure that I will have some beautiful pictures of it.

When I was working at Kids College I was counting on going to China with Lin for Christmas. But now I will not have the time off around Christmas. I am kind of bummed about not going to China now but I will go soon enough. And for now I can save; I bet you all are very happy about this as I will be able to stop prattling on about what I have seen and give you all the real meat, you know the p word.

A few weeks ago I went to a palace called Ganghwado with Lin. It was so peaceful the palace itself was very small, compared to the others I have seen. From what I remember it was built in the Gogureyou dynasty to defend from the Mongol attacks. This little town was a refreshing break from the traffic and noise of the city. The path through the ancient gate diverged into two roads meandering down the mountain, in which one side brought us to a spring. The other led us through the country side and out to the farm lands where rice appeared to have been freshly harvested. Such a beautiful break from the rush of the city! ... I wish I could have stayed there several weeks.

On that note... it is getting rather late so I will finish this thought on another day.
